Je peins depuis environ une trentaine d’années. Principalement pour m’amuser et réjouir plusieurs amis qui ont eu la gentillesse de m’encourager. Ces dernières années, je suis devenu plus motivé et plus confiant. À force de faire des petits pas, le domaine public s’est ouvert. J’ai été profondément surpris, gratifié, et ému par les réponses que l’on m’a dites.

Je me suis toujours trouvé attiré par la peinture du monde naturel qui m’entoure. Je trouve que cela crée une connexion spirituelle pour moi. Je peins en prêtant une attention particulière à ce que chaque scène différente soit-elle évoque en moi. Notamment en observant et en répondant aux couleurs et aux sons que je rencontre - ou qui me rencontrent – en me baladant dans les bois, les champs, les forêts et les marais. Aussi bien dans le sud de l’Angleterre et maintenant plus particulièrement dans ma maison d’adoption dans la région des Sept Vallées à la frontière des départements du Pas de Calais et de la Somme.

Peindre est devenu un besoin afin de mieux comprendre la vie. J’essaie enfin d’incarner dans la peinture la paix et la tranquillité que je trouve dans le monde naturel qui m’entoure.

Il y a quelque temps dans un rêve des plus curieux, j’ai entendu et vu devant moi ces mots « Et le calme encore vert du petit matin s’installa lentement, déterminé à rester aussi longtemps que possible ». Et c’est donc la quête d’incarner et de répondre à cette idée et de capturer cette vision dans toutes ces couleurs, qui est au cœur de tout ce que je cherche à faire. Pour aussi longtemps que je pourrai !

Je peins presque exclusivement à l’huile et travaille d’après photos et de mémoire. Au début, mes inspirations étaient évidemment Van Gogh, Vlaminck et David Hockney. Mais de plus en plus je fais confiance à mon propre instinct, à l’évidence de mes yeux et à ma voix intérieure.

Je suis ravi d’avoir été accueilli dans le cercle de l’Association de l’Art et des Artistes des 7 Vallées.

I have been painting for about 30 years, mostly to amuse myself and a few chosen friends who have been kind enough to encourage me. In recent years I have become braver and more confident. To the point that I have now taken small steps into the public domain and have been surprised, overwhelmed and deeply moved by the response. I have even begun to sell a few things...

I have always found myself drawn to paint the natural world around me. I find it creates a spiritual connection. I seek to paint by paying close attention to what any particular scene evokes in me. Especially through observing and responding to the colours and sounds I encounter – or which encounter me- when I walk through the woods, fields, forests and water meadows both in the south of England and, most especially, in my adopted home in the Sept Vallées region on the border of the Pas de Calais and the Somme departments.

I have discovered that I paint because I need to, in order to find more clearly what life is all about. In a most curious dream some time ago, I both heard and saw before me these words: And the quiet still green of the early morning slowly settled in, determined to remain for as long as possible. And so is the quest to embody and respond to that insight, and to capture that vision - in all its colours - that lies at the heart of all that I seek to do. For as long as I can!

I paint almost exclusively in oil and work from photos and from memory. At first, my inspirations were obviously van Gogh, Vlaminck and David Hockney, but more and more I now trust my own instincts, and the evidence of my eyes and my inner voice.
I am delighted and grateful to have been welcomed by friends and colleagues in the Association de l'Art et des Artistes des Sept Vallées amongst whom I have the great privilege and delight to live.
